Crazy Q2!

Greetings friends!
I had a very reasonable Q2 Finish Along list, I really did!
But I did not finish a single item on it!
Because at the end of March, my Dad requested and provided a trip back to Indy, which took place the week of 6 June!
Which in turn sent me into a frenzy of gift making for several family members.
All of which had to be made in the few scattered weeks of April and May in which I was actually home from a remodel job my husband and sons started in April across the state!
Nice view, eh? The house is on the banks of the Missouri River!
A refreshing change of scenery for all of us!
But that is a whole nother post!

I knew I would be staying at one of my sisters' house for several of the days I was back, so I wanted to make her a couple of roses, her favorite!
I found the exact kind of rose I was looking for after an easy google search...but it was paper pieced! Yikes! Up until this, I had only barely paper pieced, a tiny log cabin block, a couple years ago!
Well, the pattern was a free one on Craftsy, "Rose" by Jitka Designs, Inc, so I jumped in, why not? After all, it was EXACTLY what I wanted!
So I made 2!
And she loved them!
Feeling confident from this first real foray into paper piecing, I thought I might actually be able to tackle my next proposed project, an ambitious one for such a beginner!
The pattern was gifted to me by the wonderful Christine at Triangles and Squares!
And while the idea of it was very daunting to me, it really was perfect for my Mother, who has long loved dragonflies and happened to be moving to a new home shortly after my trip back!
So how could I not at least try? For my Mom!!!
Going with mostly solids really helped me in choosing my fabrics, and the six prints were chosen based on their "wing-like" qualities!
Luckily I was home alone while I made this, because it required every shred of concentration I could muster! It wasn't that it was a difficult pattern, but the technique of paper piecing itself was just so new to me that it just took all the focus I had to establish the right procedural steps and routine...do you paper piecers know what I am talking about?

In fact I would highly recommend Dragonfly Dance!  As a beginner, armed with just a basic youtube understanding of FPP, and the 2 Roses under my belt, I was able to make THIS:
Talk about confidence building! After finishing this mini quilt,  I feel like a quilting rock star!
Using Aurifil Mint Ice for quilting, I outlined each dragonfly, then used the width of my presser foot to quilt concentric lines from the center out.

It was as much quilting as I have ever put on anything!
I scored a dragonfly print for the back, and bound it in a light blue crosshatch by Quilting Treasures.
My Mama loved it!
With those 2 gifts done, there was a tote to be made!
A Level Two Tote, by Krista/Poppyprint, to be exact!
Another of my sisters, who loves elephants, had sent me a vest a year ago, with the plan of turning it into a cushion or something for her.  When I received it, a cushion did not seem "the thing", so I let it hang until the right "thing" came along.  Which it did, as soon as ever I laid eyes on that Level Two Tote!!!
This was another daunting undertaking, as my bag making skills are virtually nonexistent, although I have made several various zippered pouches!
But again, it was worth the effort because it was the perfect "thing" for this vest, and my sister!
Again, I highly recommend this pattern!  I slowly and carefully followed all the clear and thorough instructions and it turned out beautifully!
And my sister loved it!

The last item I was frantic to make was what I lovingly call my "Ipad/Magazine Cross Body Travel Bag/Purse"!
Armed with new bag making skills, I actually designed exactly what I wanted and needed for my trip!

The main sleeve is flannel lined with a plastic zipper, for my ipad:
The front zippered pocket holds my bare necessities: cash, cards/ID, chapstick, pen/pencil.
The back slip pocket was intended to hold the quilt magazine I bought specifically for travelling with, but, alas, I did not allow quite enough width. It held my planner and travel documents great though, and I just carried the magazine in the elephant tote!
I really love it!

The trip was a wonderful success!  A week of seriously quality time with my Dad, all of my 4 sisters, and my Mama!  I flew to Indiana, but returned to Montana by train, accompanied by one of my very favorite friends, Terri, who stayed out here with us for another week! All in all, an epic June for me! It really deserves a post of it's own, but I don't know if I will get to it, so I will just tag on a few highlights here at the end of this one!

Last evening of our epic adventure!

See you soon with my Q3 Finish Along list!

2017: October, November, December!

One simply cannot look to a new year with multiple "messes" strewn about, as if no one will notice.  It is akin to leaving your bed unmade in the morning...it just is not a tidy beginning to a day, or a year!
Slow Stitch Sew Along with @JillWignall
Embroidery basics!
So I aim to spruce this place up a bit with a mighty recap!

I spent many hours of September, and half of October, either up a tree stand hunting for elk with my bow,
(the river bottoms a refreshing oasis of peaceful green and undergrowth, so absent from all our other daily vistas, scorched, blackened and denuded by the fires of late July),

or else packing out elk for good friends and family who successfully filled their tags!
My son's first archery elk, first bull elk! Well done!

I have this beautiful "choker" to show for my archery efforts this year!
But I had an awesome season anyway!
That continued into October and November, gun season, as well.
his first, and long awaited Pronghorn!
Filled tags also means a lot of processing to get the meat either canned or packaged and into the freezer!

There was sewing too, of course!
Tumble Bug baby, with Sweetwater's Tree House Club, and Timeless Treasures' Color Weave
A store sample for Lewistown's Sew Pieceful, my LQS!
A Friendship Star mini, a "Thank You" for a sweet and helpful Tumble Bug pattern tester!
A birthday zipper pouch for my neighbor...
...and a few fabric "trays", one for each of her daughters!

I finished a quilt that was #3 on my "Unofficial" Q4 Finish ALong list
It is a design I plan to make into a pattern in 2018!
The working name is "Spring Break".
Ironically, the finish and photo shoot coincided with our first snow!
It is a funny, sunny, cute little thing, designed at the urging of my husband, who has always seen HSTs as little bikinis, lol!

The Sewcial Bee Sampler!
The top is assembled, but there are several in the quilting queue ahead of it!

Moda Bake Shop approved a new project idea...so glad to have another "recipe' in the works!
The quilt is about finished, I just have to write up the tutorial now!
Ombre Confetti Metallic by V. and Co.!
I started a new personal BOM in September, Simply Flying.
Flying Geese, in "verse and reverse", using my Denyse Schmidt fabrics.
I really enjoy setting myself a personal block of the month project.  The first, Simply Sawtooth, in 2015, is one of my favorite quilts!  And this one is quickly shaping up to be another! My method is easy: a simple block, that can be "reversed", made with favorite fabrics! I pick 2 fabrics a month, for as long as I like! I look forward to each months choices and completions!
December held a very big surprise for me and my little BOM....I posted a picture of my September-November geese on IG, and a gal who I have known, and followed for years, Cindy @liveacolorfullife messaged me.  She wondered, were there any DS prints I was needing, or having a hard time finding, because she had an extensive stash and was willing to share! I about flipped, literally!
When I tentatively suggested two different prints, ones that always caught my eye while on the lookout for more DS, but that I had not yet acquired, she admonished me to "Dream bigger!",
And she sent me this box,
overflowing with Denyse Schmidt goodness I had only ever seen through a computer screen!
I am still wrapping my head around Cindy's most generous and spontaneous gift!
I am so very grateful, and quite in awe of  Cindy's charity to me!

Lastly, for this extensive recap, in spite of already having begun a BOM, I dumped my selvedges one day and began making Selvedge Color Blocks.
They are pieced on fabric foundations, and I have had this particular block in mind for my selvedges since I very first saw them on Krista/Poppyprint's blog!

I have likely left something(s) out, but I feel like we are all up to speed, for now anyway!
Thank you so much for joining me here!
I will see you here again real soon, likely before the new year, as I have at least one more finish to squeeze in!
xo!

Sew Many Things!

How does one blog when their computer has been hijacked, held hostage, held for ransom...okay, not ransom, but our ever stalwart computer guy is in love and when we will get our  computer back is anyone's guess!!! argh! So, we got a new computer, and here I am!!! Sew many things!

First, this!! Have you seen it? The Get Cozy Mini by Pen + Paper Patterns, available through Craftsy! (I have been hanging in there meanwhile, via Instagram, perhaps we are friends there, too?)
I simply had to do this! I won a wonderful bundle of Front Yard fabric by Sandra Clemons, from Michael Miller Fabrics during Market week (squeee!!!) and this little thing popped up and demanded I just sample that luscious bundle of yummy! The collection has such a great variety of color, design and scale...it's, like, perfect!
The mini has proven difficult to photograph because it is long, 36" when it is all finished!
But it has a quilt in it, on the couch!! This is not paper pieced, y'all!
Actually 4 quilts...3 more on the quilt ladder!

In other progress news, the Meadow Mist Designs Mystery quilt is coming along...these are November's units.
I am still working on December, where these units are made into blocks! They are wonderful! Such a fun project...zero regrets getting in on this one!

Meanwhile, over on Instagram, I have a new "destash" account!
@cedarfork_FQdestash where I will be destashing Fat Quarters of fun random fabrics!

If you are on Instagram, I am kicking things off this evening, 12/13 at 6:00!  I want to add to the destash each Tuesday.  So jump on over and check it out!  I very much appreciate it!!
I am thrilled to be able to LINK UP with my friends this week!!!!

And Lorna: Let's Bee Social@Sew Fresh Quilts
(do y'all remember me?!)
And one more shot of my "new living room", in my sewing room ;)
*sigh* it is good to be back!

Some April Highlights

I started writing this post so long ago it is ridiculous!
Meanwhile most of the month has passed, and this has gone from a few random items to including highlights from April....enjoy!

These little notecards...because I could not bear to throw away the snippets from my Mom's little x's.
And another funny paper-block-thing-whatever-it-is, made out of my flour and sugar packaging...
Not really sure what I am doing with these, but they may end up in a kitchen...or in the woodstove, when all is said and done, no worries either way...it is kinda fun to mess around with  :)

I am steadily progressing on this simple 2-color Irish Chain, for my #2 son, Nash.
It made the list for the Q2 FAL, here!
Aaaaand the top is finished, waiting on backing and batting! Yay!

My brother in law has made a few trips to Indy....and Crimson Tate! Oh happy me!!
A little Lotta, Kaffe, Lizzy and Denyse..with a sprinkling of some fun Japanese prints :)

Turkey Season, I mean Spring, has arrived!

I love the complexity of turkey feathers!
A general greening, with dandelions and some sweet wildflowers are what we get out here.
on my daily walk...when the roads are dry :)

Spring Bear Season also came in, so Hubs and the boys headed 400+ miles across the state, and enjoyed a few days here!!! It was gorgeous 80 degree weather...
these, on the sign, were the only bears they saw.
Bass, at Trout Creek, MT :)
I think they all enjoyed the change of scenery!**

The day they returned, so did these sweethearts!
tree swallows!
This is the last sunset we have seen...it was Saturday, Passover!
I have had some fun in the several rainy days since...but that will be for another post!

**in case you might wonder, I stayed home because, well, someone has to feed the dogs! That is the sort version :) No worries, I travel plenty in this amazing state :)
